When to buy holiday insurance or when not to hedge the financially risky potential of a vacation ?
We went looking for tips on travel insurance and this is what we found.
the healthy traveller
What can go wrong ?
You are vacation planning and you are healthy. So you book your flight tickets to your chosen destination. Your plane lands and you take your suitcase with you to your prebooked resort room or motel and you unpack. You take a break and go to a local restaurant and pay the tab with a secure money voucher that you purchased at your bank when planning your vacation. You visit sites, enjoy some spa activities, meet with people, and do whatever you had on your " things to do while vacationing " list. Time flies by and before you know it you are back on the flight home. And finally home again after a very relaxing and restful holiday.
That was great !!! But what if...holiday insurance covers the what if the vacation went all wrong factor.
Pros of why holiday insurance is necessary
Your flight landed ok but you can't find your luggage and someone snatched your purse and you find yourself in the local hospital or clinic after suffering a mental collapse from all this vacation stress. And the medical professionals here are reminding you of how you were sure you'd bought travel insurance during your planning stage.
Step one on my next vacation planning schedule, you make a mental note to yourself with that one nerve that you have remaining, will be trip insurance.
What are the positive reasons to have holiday insurance ?
- a good travel insurance policy covers legal assistance and medical assistance
- part of the medical assistance on a policy covers transportation back to your own country - repatriation
- the policy covers expenses for replacing items included in lost luggage
- a good trip insurer will recover some of the losses you incurred if you have to cancel your vacation plans for a good reason and some go as far as allowing you to make a claim if you have to cut your vacation short for good reason
Cons of why holiday insurance is necessary
Risk aversion is a strange human phenomena. Some people like the risky side of life and to them living on the edge is the only way to go. This may be you and the ultimate vacation destination for you might be Las Vegas, or Monte Carlo, where you can live or die by the throw of a dice or the river card in a hand of Hold Em poker. You would never think of insuring a vacation.
Are there any reasons not to protect an investment like a trip ?
Ask yourself the same question about auto insurance. Would you drive your car without insurance ? The plain, simple, and reasonable answer is a big no. There are however people who continually travel the roads without insurance just like there are vacationers who travel the world without insurance. It doesn't make it right.
So there are very few if any cons or negative reasons to take an insurance policy to protect your time away from home.
There are however some travel insurance policies that are better than others and the only real way to tell which policy is best suited to a person of your age group is to talk to professional vacation planners who by the way are not all looking for your best interest.
So choose your vacation planning advisor carefully. Ask alot of questions. And always, always, read the fine print before signing any insurance quote contract.
Doing so will ensure that you have at least two nerves left to try to enjoy your time away from the hustle and bustle of the workaday life.
